As many of you know, I find cooking therapeutic :-) but don't have as much time to entertain people as I wish. So I am going to try combining my love for cuisine with my social and political causes.
How does it work?
I plan to create a "thali" for four - to go - once a week (or so) and ask you to donate $$ to a cause of my liking.
What is a thali? Its the equivalent of a Japanese Bento box and is a balanced meal. Usually consists of a vegetable, a lentil curry, a yoghurt dish or raita to be eaten with rice and/or roti (Indian bread) and dessert.
Tomorrow, I plan to make the following:
1. Stuffed sweet peppers - I picked them up at the farmer's market on Wed. All the produce we get is fresh and organic as far as possible. This is a spicy dish.
2. Masoor dal - mild lentils simmered with tomatos, onions and spices.
3. Cucumber raita - cools you down. My family treats these yoghurt dishes as main dishes (i.e. high volume) rather than the accompaniments they end up being in restaurants.
4. Sevia paysa - dessert
These come with basamati rice and chappatis. And home-made papad for an appetizer.
My benchmark is Roti where a similar thali goes for $20.
My cause for this week? The elections :-). Obama needs cash so I'd like him to get at least $100 for this magnificient meal. Please put your "bid" in using the comment option on this blog. Bidding closes at 1:00 on Friday.
Next week, I'll find someone to sponsor on Kiva.org so my Republican friends don't cringe.
Dinner will be ready for pick up around 5:00 p.m. Send this on to your friends if you think they will be interested.
